Commission on Native Children Virtual Hearing: Role of Federal Government
This panel will address the opportunities for a respectful partnership between the United States government, Tribes, and Native people (including the over 70% of whom reside in urban areas) that honors Self-Determination and fulfills the trust and treaty obligations of the federal government. In the era of Self-Determination, Tribes, tribal organizations and urban Indian organizations have developed strong skills and effective approaches to addressing the many ills and impediments to well-being that historical trauma has created in Native communities, based on exercising greater autonomy. The panelists will provide academic and research perspectives on the best methods to transform the relationships of the federal government with Tribes, defined by a recognition of inherent sovereignty and autonomy, so that Tribes and Native people are most able to fulfill the potential and purpose of Self-Determination as a foundation for how best to create sustainable, effective programs to improve educational, economic, health and justice outcomes for Native children.
